Results
One hundred twenty four (124) patients with bipolar depression and one hundred eleven (111) patients with acute mania were randomized to receive carbamazepine, carbamazepine + FEWP or placebo for 12 weeks. FEWP is a mixture of 11 traditional Chinese herbs. Depressed patients who received combination therapy improved significantly compared to carbamazepine alone and combination therapy appeared to be equivalent to carbamazepine.
