Results

Forty-three patients were randomized to receive venlafaxine monotherapy and forty were randomized to receive lithium monotherapy. Venlafaxine was associated with a larger improvement in depression ratings, a higher proportion of responders (> 50% reduction in HAM-D scores) and a higher proportion of remitters (HAM-D < 8). There was no significant difference between the two days on mania ratings.
